Artist Statement:
Each work is an attempt to capture the essence of the moments in life that are precious to me. I try to visually articulate those moments though the practice of art making. Each painting will take me through a journey of its own and helps me to explore, experience (both joy and frustration...much like life itself) and understand what it is to keep going beyond one's expectation or intentions.
The fluidity of calligraphy works well to capture the movements I find in Nature, Cultures and in the human body. As a Martial Artist, I'm inspired by the strong yet beautiful and refined motions in harmony I find in Wushu. The calligraphy also helps my challenges to capture the traces of deeper understanding of one's mind which we seem to encounter throughout our lives.....only to experience that we lose them so quickly. I also use Japanese writings (inspired by Zen's teachings and chants) as a medium in my works, for their flow-full shapes and the negative spaces can create the multiple spacial depth in the paintings.
On my canvas paintings, I build up layers of bold or at times subtle colors on top of various textures so that viewers will experience the physicality of the paintings and it's presence, and I hope those images will trigger some emotional bonds with viewers.
